Ski for longer and better than anywhere else

The Wildkogel Arena: guaranteed snow

The Wildkogel Arena is a winter wonderland!

Here, the conditions for skiers and snowboarders remain excellent well into spring. Whilst winter has long since drawn to a close in other winter sports regions, in this multi-award-winning family ski resort the season extends well past Easter. During the winter months, thanks to the location and orientation of the Wildkogel-Arena Neukirchen and Bramberg ski resort, so much snow accumulates that it remains on the ground longer than anywhere else.

Winter’s favourite realm

Meteorologists confirm the long winter
GeoSphere Austria has produced a report confirming reliable snow conditions in the ski resort from late November to April. The core area of the ski resort between Frühmesser (2,233 m), Braunkogel (2,167 m), Gensbichlscharte (2,021 m) and Wildkogel (2,224 m) is guaranteed to have snow from late November to April – even regardless of natural precipitation. Over the past ten years, daily average temperatures have been below zero degrees between the last ten days of November and the end of March/beginning of April.

The Wildkogel Arena is undeniably winter’s favourite playground: it has made itself at home here – with metres of snow and brilliant conditions for winter sports enthusiasts. Anyone taking the Wildkogelbahn or Smaragdbahn cable car from the national park towns of Neukirchen and Bramberg up to over 2,000 metres above sea level will find themselves in a snow-covered landscape until spring, something one would often no longer expect down in the valley.
Meteorologist Mag. Michael Butschek from GeoSphere Austria, head of the Salzburg and Upper Austria regional office, explains why this is the case:

“At higher altitudes, the Wildkogel features a very wide north-facing valley basin. During the winter months, a great deal of snow accumulates here, which is also perfectly distributed across the not-too-steep terrain by the wind. This allows the snow to last well into spring.”

Many locals, who have known the ‘Kogl’ (Wildkogel-Arena ski resort) since childhood and know it like the back of their hand, also confirm: “Whilst other ski resorts also have north-facing slopes at this altitude, the Wildkogel-Arena has the great advantage that there are many lifts located within this sheltered basin. Skiing is possible here in its entirety, and not just on individual slopes as is the case in other ski resorts at this time of year.”

Well into spring

Long, action-packed days on the slopes in perfect conditions

So it’s not just a feeling, but a reality: skiing on the best-quality slopes is possible for longer in the Wildkogel Arena than anywhere else. Even locals from the large, well-known ski resorts in the surrounding area come here. Whilst you can still enjoy the hard, finely grooved surface created by the night-time piste preparation in the early morning, the snow softens as the sun gets stronger, until you’re carving through it as if it were soft butter.
