The world's longest illuminated toboggan run
Sledging on the world’s longest floodlit toboggan run
A 14-kilometre natural toboggan run, a vertical drop of around 1,300 metres and a ride up on the Smaragdbahn: tobogganing in the Wildkogel Arena is one of the most impressive winter experiences in the SalzburgerLand. The run leads from the mountain station down into the valley to Bramberg and offers excellent conditions both during the day and in the evening.
Equipped with a helmet, gloves and sturdy footwear, the tobogganing fun begins right at the mountain station. The fully illuminated run allows for long descents and has been awarded the International Toboggan Run Seal of Quality in double gold.

- The toboggan run closes completely and the lighting is switched off at 10.00 pm (on Mondays: closure at 6.00 pm)
- Please stop and wait only in the designated waiting areas, and under no circumstances in the bends.
- Only cross the toboggan run at clear, unobstructed points.
- When the toboggan run is very busy, significant ridges may form on the track; we ask you to adjust your speed to the conditions on the toboggan run.
- You should also expect to encounter skiers on the toboggan run.
- Always hold on to your sledge by the strap to avoid putting other sledge users at risk and to prevent your sledge from getting lost.
- Appropriate clothing is essential to fully enjoy the ride. We particularly recommend ski goggles, a scarf, a hat, ski trousers or gaiters, gloves, and sturdy boots – not ski boots. Children up to and including 6 years of age should ride on their parents’ sledge! Tip: Sledging with a helmet is even safer!
- Please be considerate of other toboggan run users. Behave in such a way that no one else is endangered or harmed.
- Alcohol impairs your ability to control your sledge. Drugs reduce your reaction times and your ability to assess risks correctly.
- Sledging on ski slopes is dangerous and prohibited.
- No dogs! Four-legged friends must stay at home whilst you’re tobogganing. The risk of collisions is too great.
- Descend in a controlled manner! Descend within sight and at a safe distance from other tobogganers. Adjust your speed and riding style to your ability, the volume of traffic and the conditions.
- Observe closures and warning signs.
- For assistance following an accident, the Euro-Emergency number (112) and a location code are displayed on every second lighting pole. Secure the accident site and warn approaching tobogganists. Rescue and the billing of rescue costs are handled by the Austrian Red Cross.
- And if you need up-to-date information about tobogganing (closures, opening times, etc.), please call our tobogganing hotline. The telephone number is: +43 6565 39800
Minors under the age of 15 must wear a standard winter sports helmet when using ski slopes and toboggan runs as part of their winter sports activities.
- Parents, guardians and supervisors must ensure compliance with this requirement to the best of their ability.
- Head protection must also be worn when using other winter sports equipment, such as skibobs or toboggans, on groomed slopes.
- The helmet requirement applies in the province of Salzburg.
- The law does not provide for checks on compliance with the helmet requirement. Nor will there be any penalty for parents or guardians if a child is not wearing a helmet. The aim is simply to raise awareness of how dangerous skiing, snowboarding or tobogganing without a helmet can be for children.
- However, in the event of an accident, failure to comply with the helmet requirement could lead to problems with insurance companies, which may refuse to cover the costs of the accident.
In any case, it would be sensible for children, teenagers and adults alike to wear a helmet (these can also be hired from all ski hire shops or ski schools – subject to availability), as most skiing accidents result in serious head injuries. Wearing a helmet can reduce the risk of a serious head injury.
FAQs: The longest illuminated toboggan run
The toboggan run is open from around mid-December to early/mid-March, depending on snow and weather conditions.
Last ascent: 4.15 pm.
On Fridays, weather permitting, an extended ascent service is available until 6.30 pm on the Smaragdbahn.
The toboggan run is lit along its entire length daily (except Mondays until 6.00 pm) until 10.00 pm. After 10.00 pm, the toboggan run is closed to all users.
To further enhance the tobogganing experience and ensure the best conditions, extensive grooming work is carried out every Monday from 6.00 pm.
You can find the prices for a tobogganing ticket or a day pass on the pricing page!
The tickets include the ascent via the Wildkogel mountain railways and use of the toboggan run.
A valid Wildkogel-Arena ski pass can, of course, be used for the ascent until 4.15 pm.
However, the evening run (ascent after 4.15 pm) is not included in the ski pass.
Children aged 6 and under must ride on their parents' sledge!
Tip: Wearing a helmet makes sledging even safer!
Unfortunately, dogs have to stay at home whilst we’re out tobogganing.
The risk of them getting into an accident is too high.
There are several sports shops and equipment hire outlets around the Smaragdbahn valley station. You
can find their contact details >here<
For larger groups, we recommend booking the sledges in advance. You
can find the contact details >here<
Of course, you are welcome to use our toboggan runs with your own sledge
The toboggan run is NOT a hiking trail and is always very busy. We therefore do not recommend walking along the toboggan run.
The mountain restaurants and huts are also keen to treat you to some delicious food. A cold or hot drink or two will make your evening tobogganing even more fun 😉.
