Großvenediger – a majestic mountain as old as time
Climb the highest peak in Salzburg
The Großvenediger is also known as the “Ancient Majesty” due to its imposing appearance, and at 3,657 metres, it is the highest mountain in the province of Salzburg. For a long time, it was considered unconquerable, and even the Großglockner, Austria’s highest mountain, had been conquered years before the Großvenediger.
The striking, glaciated summit is part of the Venediger Group in the Hohe Tauern and was first conquered in 1841 by courageous mountaineers.
What many people don’t know is that the name of the Venediger Group in the Hohe Tauern may well derive from the passing muleteers who once travelled over the Tauern towards Venice, or from the view from the Großvenediger, which on exceptionally clear days is said to stretch as far as Venice, some 180 kilometres away as the crow flies.

Großvenediger Tour
Salzburg’s highest three-thousand-metre peak is tackled from the Obersulzbachtal valley, including an overnight stay (or stays) at the Kürsingerhütte – the ultimate challenge for fit and sure-footed mountaineers.
The ascent from the north, following the route taken by the first ascenders, offers magnificent views of the surrounding landscape. On the first day, you ascend to the Kürsingerhütte. You can significantly shorten the approach through the roughly 13 km long Obersulzbachtal by taking the hiking taxi or using an e-bike. At the Kürsingerhütte material cable car, you have the option of either ascending to the hut via the standard route, known as the “Klamml”, or following the path towards the glacial lake and climbing up to the hut via the Kürsinger via ferrata on its northern shore. (Please note: a climbing harness with via ferrata set and helmet are required here!)
The next day, you set off with the mountain guide early in the morning. Still by the light of headlamps, you head towards the glacier approach. Here, you will be roped up and, if necessary, crampons will be fitted. The route now follows a steady climb, past massive crevasses, towards the Venedigerscharte. The final metres to the summit cross lead over an exposed snow ridge.
