Historic Hochfeld Mine

Fascinating insights into this copper mine and Hohe Tauern National Park

Hochfeld Mine in the National Park

- Hochfeld Mine in the National Park -

Are you interested in knowing how people lived and worked in the copper mines of old? Would you like to immerse yourself in the distant past and feel for yourself just how tough working conditions must have been back in "the good old days"? If so, be sure to stop by the Hochfeld mine, located in lower Untersulzbachtal valley.

During a guided tour of Hochfeld mine taking around 90 to 120 minutes, not only will you learn more about the history of copper mining, which spanned about half a millennium here until 1954, you will also hear intriguing information about how minerals are created in the first place. In addition, you will be exposed to the geological diversity of the Hohe Tauern mountains along with the so-called "Tauern Window".

And if you choose to make your way from Gasthof Schütthof to the Hochfeld mine on foot, you will also pass a natural monument, Untersulzbach Waterfall. In other words, this excursion allows you to enjoy two appealing attractions in one during your visit to Hohe Tauern National Park Holiday Region.
