Obersulzbach Valley - with view of the Grosser Geiger

GLACIER TRAIL - OBERSULZBACHTAL

Along the Glacier Trail at the valley head, hikers are able to experience the landscapes shaped by the Obersulzbach Glacier in the midst of Wildkogel Holiday Arena. In no danger whatsoever, you will make your way to edge of the ice of this constantly retreating glacier. The informative trail brochure "Obersulzbachtal Glacier Path" is an indispensible companion for this hike.

Blausee

DER BLAUSEE - NATURERLEBNIS AM FUßE DES GROßVENEDIGERS

At the entrance to glacially sculpted Obersulzbachtal Valley lies the Blausee, a lake at the edge of the Hohe Tauern National Park nestled amidst an imposing cultural and natural landscape. This small lake was created about 100 years ago, after a 12 m-high dam was built on the Obersulzbach.

This pristine body of water is today a valuable habitat for diverse flora and fauna. Benefiting from the well-structured shoreline, the sand and gravel banks are numerous bird species such as the grey wagtail with its striking yellow plumage, as well as the elegant grey heron. Tree roots protruding into the water provide cover for fish, whilst the gravely-sandy lake bottom is an ideal home for insect larvae. Frogs, toads and newts find in the amphibian biotope, also affectionately nicknamed the "frog pond", an ideal spawning ground .

Bettlersteig Neukirchen

THE BETTLERSTEIG in Neukirchen

The Bettlersteig trail connects the two Sulzbach valleys. It’s best to take the valley taxi from Neukirchen to Upper Sulzbach Valley as far as the Berndlalm, the trail head for this hike. It is here that the narrow forest trail branches off, gently climbing to the Kampriesen Hochalm, and from there in a series of steeper switchbacks to the top of the 2,000 m Bettler Scharte. Once at the top, take a well-earned break and soak in the glorious vistas. The descent to the Untersulzbach Valley leads initially via the moderate slopes of the Hochalm, then crosses the Wechselklamm through very steep terrain. From there, the Bettlersteig becomes gentler again, crossing alpine meadows on its way down to the Finkalm, where refreshments are available.

The return hike to Neukirchen follows the Untersulzbachtal trail, or you can take the valley taxi from Gasthof Stockeralm. The Bettlersteig runs partially through steep terrain and is only recommended for hikers with alpine experience. Time on trail from the Berndlalm via the Bettlersteig trail to the Finkalm, or reverse direction, is about 3 to 3.5 hours .

THE GROSSVENEDIGER (3.674 m)

We will take the valley taxi through Obersulzbachtal in Wildkogel Holiday Arena up to an elevation of about 2,000 m above sea level. The hike to the Kürsingerhütte takes about 2 hours. In the meantime, a freight lift will carry our rucksacks up to the hut. Early in the morning of the second day, our trail takes across fields of boulders, then via magnificent glaciers, past the imposing north face to the Venedigerscharte. After some 5 hours total hiking time, we will finally reach the summit of the Grossvenediger.
